What is Common Core?

In 2009 a group of five people created a set of standards in Mathematics and English Language Arts. They were copyrighted and offered to states if they adopted the standards “in whole”. States were given  an incentive to adopt the standards by the Obama administration through Race To The Top grant money. Read More

Some Governors have recently signed legislation withdrawing their state from Common Core and are in the process of writing their own standards. We need Governor Scott to do the same. Please let him know that just changing the name isn’t fooling anyone.

Just A Few Reasons Why Common Core Is Bad

    • Takes away your parental rights and local control of education
    • Is an invasion of student and family privacy
    • Individual education for your special needs child will be ignored
    • FCAT on steroids
    • Openly discriminates against minority students
    • Developmentally inappropriate, psychologically and academically harmful
    • Math and English are two years behind current standards
    • Falsely states that American students cannot compete internationally
    • Your charter, private, religious and home schooled children will be forced to learn and be tested on Common Core material
    • Implementation will be a huge cost to Florida taxpayers
    • Forces students into data-driven career paths
    • A dangerous, untested, experiment in education

Don't Be Fooled!

There is a ground swell of opposition to Common Core across the country. As parents and educators learn more about Common Core they are rejecting it. In the face of this opposition Governor Mike Huckabee famously stated “Rebrand it, refocus it, but don’t retreat,”.
Here in Florida they have done just that. Making minor changes to the Common Core Standards and giving it the new name Florida State Standards.
Don’t be fooled. If you put lipstick on a pig it’s still a pig. Florida State Standards are still Common Core Standards and it is already in our classrooms. Bad for our kids… bad for Florida!

So Take Action Now!!

Call, email or write to Governor Scott, your representatives in Tallahassee, and your local school board members as many times as you can. Leave comments on their Facebook pages to stop common core and tweet them #stopcommoncore. Anything you can do to let him know this issue is important to us, because these are our children and their future is at stake.

What Can You Do?

It is important to know your Florida State Legislators. Call, email and even meet with them to let them know that you want Common Core removed from Florida classrooms. We want an age appropriate, evidenced-based curriculum that is locally created by qualified education professionals and an end to high-stakes testing. Tell them to support our Bill which you can read and share with them HERE

A Small Victory In A Big War!

After two years of protesting the failures of Common Core and high-stakes testing to the Palm Beach County School Board and asking them to put a stop to it, they are finally hearing us. This is because of the growing number of loud and consistent opposition from the people of Florida. Please watch this interview with Karen Brill, a member of the Palm Beach County School Board and President of The Greater Consortium of School Boards, explaining why they are now against high-stakes testing.

TO THE POINT, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2014: KAREN BRILL

This is just a small, but significant, battle in the war against Common Core and we ask that you continue to educate as many people as you can to help us in this fight to have an education system that works for all the children of Florida.
